Tax Attorney Help in the Windy City

March 19th, 2012 Posted in finance Tags:

Chicago is a great place to live and a great place to work, but that doesn’t mean that it has been immune to the economic slowdown. Portions of the city show damage to this day and that makes tax season a potentially very stressful time. Fortunately, there is help available to get you through your tax situation no matter how confused you are or how bad your situation looks.

Tax help can come in many forms, whether that means finding a tax professional or accountant to help you look through your books for any exemptions you have missed so that you can get the biggest return possible, or taking more extreme measures like hiring a Tax attorney Chicago to talk directly with the IRS and advocate for a lower tax bill for you based on your situation. There are options out there which can save you big money and big opportunities.

One possibility is that your attorney can negotiate a new payment plan that gives you more time to make up what you owe. Otherwise you can even land an oic, or offer in compromise, in which some of your debt is canceled if the amount offered by the taxpayer is equal to or greater than the reasonable collection potential. This way if you have suffered something unexpected that is limiting your ability to pay your taxes the IRS wont push you over the edge into bankruptcy or worse, so that they can get their money back next time. But only proper representation gives you any chance of making this work.

Finally, No More Fluorescent!

March 8th, 2012 Posted in lifestyle Tags:

Have you heard of t8 bulbs? If you work in a typical office building it might be about time you did. T8s are the leading alternative to those annoying fluorescent lights that we’ve all forced ourselves to get used to. At last you can be rid of those blinking tube lights and have something that feels natural.

I don’t want to be unfair. I totally understand why so many office buildings, schools, hospitals and other large structures chose fluorescent bulbs in the first place. Back in the 80s they were the most cost effective option. LED bulbs had not yet been made commercially viable and companies had to make do with what they could get.

However fluorescent tubes have many problems associated with them. Aside from being individually expensive, they have a high failure rate and a lot of maintenance cost associated with them. They also waste a lot of energy. LED light are substantially more energy efficient, they last longer, and perhaps most importantly they put off off a warmer, more satisfying light.

You don’t have to keep working with cold white light over your head. Try out the t8 bulbs today. They fit right into the same fixtures as your old fluorescent tubes but they will make a significant difference in the quality of your workspace. At the same time they will save you significant money in terms of the energy cost and the reduced maintenance cost, all while making a positive difference for the environment. There’s no better choice you can make.

The growing concern with student loan debt

March 5th, 2012 Posted in lifestyle Tags:

Student loan debt is exploding across the nation. I wish that statement was metaphorical. Currently student loan debt is quickly passing the total credit card debt of Americans (which has declined throughout the recession) and shows no signs of stopping. While the increasing price of education is supposedly to blame many financial experts are pointing to a deeper issue, with far reaching and unfortunately consequences on the horizon.

In 2005 President GW Bush signed in a suite of laws which completely changed the way bankruptcy works in America. These laws covered the worst abuses of the system but, as many a bankruptcy lawyer fears, has created a new abuse. These new laws eliminated student loan debt as dischargeable by bankruptcy. While this means that med students cannot discharge their two hundred thousand dollars of educational debt after graduation (an abuse) it also means that colleges, universities, the government, and private funding agencies suddenly had access to a guaranteed source of interest. College graduates.

Currently the average graduating debt of a college student is $20,000. That entering a workforce of 10% unemployment. This means that many students are finding themselves un and under employed at exactly the time that their student loan payments kick in. While deferment is possible there are many, too many, who fall behind and have no release valve and no escape hatch for their debt. That debt follows them and essentially smothers any financial possibilities their early adult life may have had.

Dangers of the modern interwebs.

Internet, Interwebs, a series of tubes… Whatever you may want to call it the internet is a vast opportunity for the human race, the greatest collection and system for information sharing, personal connectivity, and collaboration. It is defining and will continue to define the modern age. It is a great thing.

But not all great things are good for everyone. The world’s greatest system is primarily used to ‘peddle the world’s oldest profession’ as pornography makes up the bulk of the sites online. Other equally dangerous threats abound for children, many of them websites that glorify violence, promote unethical data sharing, or other unwholesome activities and ideals. The sheer number of sites present another problem . There are well over a trillion sites online with an infinite amount of data available. For children, who have limited self control in the first place, this presents a bottomless pit of distraction as games, forums, movies, videos, activities, news articles, and more can eat up their mental hard drive and distract from social connections and schoolwork.

Modern social media presents another avenue of trouble for child to child interaction. Will your son or daughter know enough to filter what they post, leaving out addresses and dates and times that could be used against your family in the real world? Do they know how to avoid cyber-bullying or other user-to-user interaction? Are their IM conversations in chat rooms and other sources guarded against pedophiles and other risky individuals?

Talk to your children about the internet, your expectations, and limits. And make sure you have a good suite of parental control software to ensure that your access to the internet is under control and your family stays safe online.

How Does Dumpster Rental Work?

February 10th, 2012 Posted in business Tags:

I remember when I was a new homeowner. I tried to bootstrap everything and I never wanted to hire a dumpster rental for a project. For some reason I thought dumpsters were very expensive and would be a hassle to get, so I just put the idea out of my mind.

Wow was I wrong. Eventually my wife convinced me we needed to rent one, and I’m so glad she did. We were breaking up an old concrete pad in the back yard to make way for a new garden shed. Breaking up the concrete was no problem – it’s hard work but kind of rewarding. But it produced so many more concrete pieces than I thought it would! It seemed to go on forever. If I had been putting it in contractor bags and then in the normal garbage we would’ve had a mountain of bags for months. Assuming the city would even take that stuff at all.

Instead we called up and got a dumpster rental. The first thing that amazed me was how inexpensive it was. I assumed all dumpsters are huge but they had many different sizes and they recommended one of the smaller ones for my project. Secondly, I was panicking because I thought I’d need to find a friend with a pickup truck to go and get the dumpster. But the rental company just drops it off at your house and then picks it up again when you’re done!

It turned out it was really easy to do, but more importantly, it made my project way easier too. I recommend you always rent a dumpster for any home improvement project.

Trending Now: A Jet Charter Service

January 10th, 2012 Posted in travel Tags:

Spot a new trend in travel and learn more about using a jet charter service for your next trip. Whether you travel a lot for business or if you are looking to book a trip for the whole family, now is an opportune time to check out these charters and see if using this type of service is something you might be interested in. Below are the top three reasons why people are willing to pay more to charter their own flights.

#1 Privacy. The number one reason why most people opt to go with a chartered jet plane is because it allows them a level of privacy that they will be unable to get even flying first class. Feel free to travel with your family and sit back and enjoy yourself on a private jet. You will have all of the privacy you need to feel comfortable.

#2 The ability to travel when it is convenient for you. Another complaint people have about commercial airlines is that they are unable to travel when they want to. Chartered planes allow you much more flexibility when it comes to booking flights and flying at the last minute.

#3 Less hassle. Flying on a commercial place has become a lot more of a hassle then it was fifteen years ago. Security measures are stricter and the list of items banned from planes can take you an hour to read through. While safety is an important concern there is no reason why you should spend hours in line waiting for a security scan.

St. Patrick’s Day Decorations Done Right

January 5th, 2012 Posted in lifestyle Tags:

When it comes to planning for St. Patrick’s Day decorations are half of the process. No real St. Patrick’s Day party is complete without putting throught into setting the tone and mood of the celebration with the right streamers and posters to get your guests in the right mindset for this ancient Irish holiday. However, unlike other holidays like Christmas or Halloween, planning the decorations for a good St. Patrick’s Day party is actually pretty difficult and requires a bit of forethought.

You can certainly start your St. Patrick’s Day decorations with a lot of shamrocks and leprechauns, but that is only going skin deep for this celebration. To add some real flavor to the event it is necessary to go beyond the green and into some Irish culture. In addition to your green streamers and shamrock posters you should also add gold and white as secondary colors. Use balloons or streamers to accomplish this accent. Hang a row of shamrocks over the door frame to grant your guests good luck when they enter, or put up the traditional “Cead Mille Failte” banner (translating to “a hundred thousand welcomes!” in Gaelic).

If you are going to go into the leprechaun theme then remember to set up a rainbow ending in a pot of gold. You can make your rainbow out of paper streamers or even just coloring a poster board on your own. Put a pot beneath it and fill the pot with chocolate candy coins wrapped in gold foil, and spread a few more of them out on your table for guests to enjoy while they eat dinner. Never forget to add an Irish flag on one wall, and you can even bring in a large stone from outside to act as your Blarney Stone.

The key to decorating for St. Patrick’s Day lies in adding more detail and more flair than just a bunch of shamrocks. These few tips will help create a festive atmosphere that really emphasizes the theme and mood of the holiday for your guests to enjoy. Just add some traditional Irish cooking and maybe a flagon or two of good ale for the adults and you have a great evening in the mix!
